Why teams switch

Why companies move backups to object storage

Most teams reach a point where their backup storage becomes the problem — not the solution.

Infrastructure complexity

Traditional backup systems require expensive storage arrays, manual capacity planning and dedicated engineering time. Every scaling decision means a procurement cycle — not a config change

Unpredictable costs

Many cloud providers charge separately for storage, API requests, bandwidth and restore operations. A routine DR test can generate an unexpected bill, and monthly costs stay hard to budget in advance

Vendor lock-in

Backup systems tied to proprietary storage formats make switching expensive and complex. Your data becomes dependent on a single vendor's pricing and roadmap — with no easy path out

Rabata provides S3-compatible object storage that integrates with existing backup tools — keeping infrastructure simple, costs predictable at $6/TB per month, and your data free from vendor lock-in.

High-performance storage for backup workloads

Backup systems generate large sequential uploads and frequent metadata operations. Rabata is benchmarked against major S3 providers using MinIO Warp, an open-source benchmarking tool built for object storage workloads.

  • Upload throughput — 1,462 MB/s — faster backup ingestion reduces backup windows and production impact. Rabata reached 1,462 MB/s, ahead of AWS S3 (1,444 MB/s) and DigitalOcean Spaces (1,440 MB/s).
  • Mixed workload performance — 346 MB/s — handles the simultaneous reads, writes and metadata operations typical of backup jobs. Rabata achieved 346 MB/s, more than 2× AWS S3 (151 MB/s) in the same test.
  • Small object throughput — 696 objects/sec — backup jobs generate thousands of small metadata objects and index files. Rabata processes 696 objects/sec, compared to 319 objects/sec on AWS S3.

Benchmark methodology: tests were run with MinIO Warp across AWS S3, DigitalOcean Spaces, Backblaze B2 and Cloudflare R2. The setup and commands are fully reproducible — see the full benchmark results.

How Rabata backup storage works

Three steps from an empty bucket to a restorable backup. No code changes, no proprietary connectors.

  • 1

Sign up and create a bucket

Create an account, generate access keys and create a bucket in your preferred region (eu-west-2 or us-east-1). No credit card required, $20 in starter credit included.

  • 2

Configure Rabata as an S3 target

Add Rabata as an S3-compatible target using your credentials and endpoint. Any tool that supports S3 works out of the box — no code changes, no custom connectors.

  • 3

    Restore when needed

Retrieve data directly over the API during recovery. No rehydration delays, no restore queues. Typical restores are covered by your included egress allowance.

Key features for backup infrastructure

S3-compatible storage

Works with any backup tool that supports the S3 protocol — Veeam, Restic, rclone, Duplicati and more. No code changes, no custom connectors.

Object Lock immutability illustration

Immutability & versioning

Object Lock protects backups from ransomware and accidental deletion — once written, backups can't be modified or removed during the retention period. Versioning keeps prior states recoverable.

Single storage rate illustration

One simple rate

$6/TB per month, with egress included up to 3× your average monthly storage each month. One rate for everything — no separate backup tier, no per-request charges.

No hidden fees illustration

No hidden fees

No API request charges, no surprise line items. Routine restores are covered by your included egress allowance — only usage above that is billed, at the same simple rate.

Frequently asked questions about cloud backup storage

Your backup software connects to Rabata over the standard S3 API. During a backup job it uploads data directly to your Rabata bucket; during recovery it retrieves that data the same way. Rabata acts as the storage backend — your existing backup software, schedule and workflow stay unchanged. No agents, no proprietary connectors.

Yes. Both support S3-compatible storage targets. Add Rabata as an S3-compatible repository using your regional endpoint (eu-west-2 or us-east-1), access key and secret key. No custom plugins or configuration beyond standard S3 credentials — the migration guide covers the steps for each tool.

Yes. Storage is billed at $6/TB per month with no minimum storage duration and no tiering fees for older data. Billing is calculated daily, so you pay only for what you actually store. No minimum fees, no commitments.

$6/TB per month, with egress included up to 3× your average monthly storage each month. No API request fees, no minimum commitment. $20 in starter credit, no credit card required. Full details in the billing documentation.

Any backup tool with S3 support works with Rabata out of the box. This includes rclone, Restic, Veeam, Duplicati and most modern backup and disaster recovery tools. If your tool has an S3-compatible target option, point it at your Rabata endpoint with your access key and secret key — nothing else is needed.

Rabata provides IAM access control for role-based permissions, Object Lock with versioning for immutable storage that prevents backups from being modified or deleted, and private buckets by default to keep backup data inaccessible to unauthorised requests. All API requests are authenticated using AWS Signature Version 4.

Restores happen directly over the S3 API — no rehydration process, no restore queue, no delay before data is accessible. Speed depends on your network bandwidth. Restores are covered by your included egress allowance (3× average monthly storage) for typical recovery volumes; only usage above that is billed, at the same $6/TB rate.

Most teams are up and running in under 30 minutes. Sign up, generate access keys, create a bucket and point your existing backup software at the Rabata S3 endpoint. No new agents, no code changes.
